Ceramic sculptures from the Oliver People series are reminiscent of totem poles; they evoke primal feelings in the human nature made up of multiple layers. This multiplicity is reflected in the modular structure of the figures with each layer having a different color and shape. These layers are stacked up vertically, which makes the ceramics look even more fragile than it actually is.
At the same time, the rounded, spheric and cylindrical modules seem to be organically growing from one another. Katy Emelyanova says these modules are embodiments of different types of personality, of human nature; when watched at they channel the viewer’s mood and state of mind and the sculpture becomes an animate object.
